AirTag in a suitcase vs a lock that tracks itself

A common workaround before a smart lock existed was simply dropping a standalone AirTag into a side pocket of a suitcase. It works, technically — the bag still shows up in Find My as long as the AirTag stays inside it. The trade-off is that the tracker and the bag are two separate objects: if the AirTag shifts to a different pocket during a security check, gets moved into a different bag by mistake, or is removed along with something else, the tracking data no longer reflects where your actual luggage is.

Building Find My directly into the lock removes that gap.
